ratchet style closure
"i like ratchet style closure. i am a daily all weather commuter (20miles a day) and recitational distance cyclist. i like to be able to adjust on the fly. This will be my third pair of r171 (i bought these as a spare). The major problem is if you expose these to allot of rain ( i live in the pacific northwest usa) and have allot of use over time the sole may start to separate from the shoe. i usually just 2 part epoxy it back together."

"Let's face it. Shimano knows how to build a great product and I'd still be wearing the Shimano shoes I bought 50,000 miles ago if the ratchet mechanism hadn't gotten a bit wonky (it still works, but I don't want to be shoeless miles from home), The mechanism on the updated shoes looks more robust. I will admit I am awarding that fifth star on faith but after 50,000 miles it's hard to complain about the older model shoe showing its age."
