The XTR PD-M980 design is leaner than the 970, with all the unwanted material shaved away, this amounts to a pedal that is roughly 20 grams lighter than it's brother, the M-970. The most significant design change is that the body has a small, flat platform on the inboard and outboard edges to keep your shoe from twisting on the pedal.
